History and Legacy of Harry Winston

The doors of Harry Winston first opened in 1932, taking inspiration from the excitement of New York City, a legacy in jewelry began. Gemstones became pieces of art.

The Hope Diamond

Harry Winston Hope Foundation BenefitAmong the greatest of Mr. Winston’s gemstones, the Hope Diamond, discovered in India in the mid 1600s, sized at 45.52-carats, this blue diamond with along list of previous owners including Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette, and later came into possession of Mr. Winston when he purchased it in 1949 acquired from the estate of an American socialite. He later donated it to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC as a gift to the world. In 2010 celebrating the anniversary of Harry Winston Inc, the Hope Diamond was graced with a new setting, the Embracing Hope.

Nurturing Jewels

With along tradition of not only embracing jewels, but nurturing them, evident from Mr. Winston’s acquisition of gems from all around the world like the 601-carat LESOTHO rough diamond, unearthed by a woman in South Africa. It was purchased by Winston and cleaved during a live broadcast in 1968 resulting in 18 separate gems. The largest gem, the LESOTHO ONE, a 71.73 carat emerald cut diamond and LESOTHO THREE, a 40.42-carat diamond purchased by Aristotle Onassis for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ engagement ring. Winston’s collection toured to major cities in an exhibition from 1949 to 1953, called the “Court of Jewels”.
