On 22 July 2017, The Souliris productions – an independent ballet production company specialising in production of unique story-based ballet performances in exclusive locations served guests from Geneva and the residents of The Alpina Gstaad Hotel – a five-star superior hotel where authenticity combines with Swiss refinement to create an Alpine experience like no other – a gourmet cultural ‘dish’: ‘I’m Your Man’ musical ballet, dedicated to the late musician Leonard Cohen.
The ballet took place in The Private Cinema Club auditorium. Normally accessible to the privileged few staying in this Swiss jewel of the hospitality, the auditorium for this special night was opened up and turned into a mini theatre with 50 designer leather chairs arranged in the amphitheatre style on the three raised levels.
The ambiance of the auditorium and the location of The Alpina Gstaad with its breath-taking view of the Swiss Alps suited perfectly for the theme and the story of this innovative production that played on the contrasts of classical and contemporary ballet, incorporating both styles in a fascinating and comprehensive way, and mixing in acting and immersive theatre techniques.
The story of the ‘I’m Your Man’ ballet (www.yourmanmusicalballet.com) was scripted by the author and playwright, Seraphima Bogomolova, and was inspired by the creativity of Milan Kundera and his book Unbearable Lightness of Being and the lyrics of Leonard Cohen’s songs. The ‘I’m Your Man’ story covered the subject of soul-searching and love, and addressed questions of loss and gain, and decisions we have to make while on a life journey.
‘We are happy to have been able to stage our ballet in such a different location [The Alpina Gstaad]. The setting perfectly matched the mood and the ambiance of the ballet and added an extra dimension to our storytelling. We were also delighted to see how a relatively ‘private’ event could have a profound effect on the audience. Some guests commented on having goose bumps while watching the story unfold. One comment in particular that made us extremely content was by the Alpina American guests who, after the performance, suggested that the ‘I’m Your Man’ musical ballet should come to New York City. Well, why not? ‘Gourmet’ ballets can be very well served in a big megapolis too. – says, Seraphima Bogomolova, Founder and Managing Director of Souliris productions.
The ‘I’m Your Man musical ballet was danced out by the ballet dancers from Prague, Czech Republic – Jakub Rasek, The Young Man (a ballet dancer from the Prague National ballet company), Tamara Ksirova, The Visitor (a ballet dancer performing in The Laterna Magika Theatre of The Prague National Theatre), and Vojtech Rak, The Shadow (a dancer from the 420PEOPLE contemporary dance company).
