Elizabeth Taylor’s ‘Green Goddess’ 1960 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II

In 1960, Miss Taylor ordered her custom built Rolls Royce. She picked up the new automobile in England early in 1961. Later that year, she shipped it to the U.S.

Known globally as the “Green Goddess it was bestowed with this name due to its unique custom green color. The green color matched Taylor’s wedding dress and many other outfits she was photographed wearing throughout the rest of her career. This green was her favorite color. It was shortly after her widely publicized wedding to singer Eddie Fisher, Elizabeth Taylor ordered this stunning car for herself. She later divorced Eddie Fisher and married Richard Burton. She kept the Rolls.

Elizabeth Taylor’s Green Goddess is a 1960 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II, a H. J. Mulliner Drophead Coupe, #LSWC278. This is a left hand (American) drive, a “matching numbers” automobile, 40,644 miles. It is in beautiful condition with with a rebuilt engine, new leather interior and new convertible top. There have been only two owners since it was made.  It is one of approximately twenty left hand drive Silver Cloud II Drophead coupes (convertible) ever built.  Eddie Fisher and Elizabeth Taylor traveled to Rome in 1962 for the filming of the landmark motion picture, Cleopatra. They took the Green Goddess with them.

While on the set of Cleopatra, Miss Taylor meets and has an affair with her co-star, Richard Burton. Eddie Fisher damages the fender of the Rolls Royce when rushing to the Rome film set. In 1963, the Green Goddess is returned to the United States and Richard Burton is often spotted behind the wheel. Elizabeth Taylor keeps the Green Goddess  for nearly two decades until the late 1970’s when she offers it for sale in the Wall Street Journal.

The car is stored and sold from Miss Taylor’s “bungalow” at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The current owner purchased the Rolls Royce directly from Miss Taylor and has remained the owner ever since making it a “two owner” car. The current owner has maintained the car properly over his more than forty years of ownership where it has remained on the West Coast its entire life and never subjected to wintry conditions.

To understand the connection between price and provenance, a comparative look at a 1959 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud I Drophead Coupe which is currently being offered for sale by a prominent U.S. vintage car dealer for $649,900. The Silver Cloud I is considered slightly less valuable than the Silver Cloud II. That car has higher mileage and more prior owners. Most importantly, the other car does not have a connection to an iconic celebrity. Needless to say, celebrity ownership frequently has a great impact on the value of an item. Examples of celebrity impact on the worth of objects include a $2 baseball that sold for $3 million, a $10,000 guitar that was sold for $3.5 million, a $10,000 Kennedy family boat that sold for $6 million, Jackie Kennedy’s faux pearls, valued at $65 sold at auction for a remarkable $211,500.

Elizabeth Taylor’s La Peregrina diamond and ruby necklace, valued at less than one million dollars, sold at auction for over $11 million due to Ms. Taylor’s ownership. Without question, Elizabeth Taylor was one of the most important and admired individuals of the twentieth century.
