The Cannes Yachting Festival showcases the finest in luxury – here are our French Riviera favourites
September’s Cannes Yachting Festival lived up to its promise; a six-day long celebration of all things yachting and the glamorous lifestyle that accompanies it.
The action-packed event was held from Tuesday, September 11th to Sunday, September 16th and transformed the Vieux Port de Cannes and Port Pierre Canto into a vibrant showcase for 638 yachts, including 219 new models, and 542 exhibitors. As with every edition, there was no shortage of Cannes yacht show highlights from both the world of boating and the world of luxury.
But, of all the beautiful boats and products on display, what did we think were the perfect accompaniments to life on the French Riviera?
The 2018 Cannes Yacht Show Highlights
All hail the new Princess
Of the 122 world premieres at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, none were as highly anticipated as the Princess R35 sports yacht. The revolutionary model had been cloaked in secrecy throughout its development and hidden behind bright, geometric dazzle camouflage during sea trials in Portsmouth. Finally, at Cannes, the wait was over and we were introduced to a Princess unlike any other. Developed in partnership with Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) Technologies and Italian car design firm Pininfarina, the 35ft performance sports yacht not only looks the part but can achieve speeds of 50 knots. We can’t imagine a more fitting accessory to a holiday on the Côte d’Azur, moored up outside one of the many luxury Cap d’Antibes rentals, ready for a day cruising the hidden coves of French Riviera coastline.
On the subject of Côte d’Azur day charters, the hottest thing in yachting right now is the beach club. This onboard entertaining space is drawing guests away from the decks to the waterline, where alfresco lounges and bar areas seamlessly transition into the open sea. For smaller boats without dedicated beach club areas, however, there is an easy way to follow the trend: the inflatable beach club.
We loved this smart example from Calletti which includes a variety of detachable components including paddleboards – as well as plenty of space to lounge in the sun.
Meeting the new Maserati range
An official show partner, the sleek lines of Maserati provided another of the Cannes yacht show highlights. The Italian luxury car manufacturer had its entire 2019 range on display, including the Levante, its first-ever SUV, the Quattroporte, its classic sports saloon, and the Ghibli sports sedan.
VIPs were chauffeured to and from the festival in the supercar fleet, and some lucky visitors were even able to take a model for a test drive along Cannes’ iconic La Croisette. We think it’s the perfect vehicle for navigating both the coastal curves and the sweeping mountain circuits of the Côte d’Azur.
Tulip – the wine cooler for yachts and jets
Cannes isn’t only about yacht launches, and one of the most intricate premieres of the show was the Tulip by Germain. A completely unique design which draws upon state-of-the-art gyroscope technology, this wine and Champagne cooler is built for motion and can withstand a tilt of up to 30°- without spilling a drop of liquid. The smart design also incorporates eight glass holders.
If you’ve ever hit ocean swells or mid-air turbulence with a glass of red wine in hand, you’ll appreciate just how much this is an innovation for yachts and private jet travel. This incredible design is guaranteed to be a conversation starter around dinner tables and during cocktail soirées under the Côte d’Azur night sky.
We’re already looking forward to the 2019 edition of the Cannes yacht show. Highlights are sure to be the dedicated showcase of over 100 sailing yachts in Port Pierre Canto and expanded exhibition areas for the motor nautical industry in the Vieux Port. See you there!
